“The small white box resembles a bee have box with embossed ridges to denote planks of wood & nails. The famous Klein Constantia crest is gold foiled on the front of the box below the diecut slit that has one bee on its way into the box inviting you to open the packaging. The box opens to reveal a, bee covered, honey comb pattern as well as small diecut bees packaged inside each box. all the bees were also detailed with gold foiling. “

Designed by Terence Kitching. I’m not much in to packaging design, but this is a really nice piece of design. Each element has been carefully considered as to the meaning and representation behind each.

So I recently posted about some of my ideas for a current project. This brief was put on the back burner over the weekend due to the dissertation draft needing to be completed!! Here is some of the concept work that I was working on in the studio last week, it is basically exploring lighting set ups to create potential shadows from my cut out design. Some of the pictures are taken on a professional set up and some are taken on my BlackBerry just because the light through the window cast some interesting shadows.

After I had taken a few test photographs of the cut out shapes, I then tried to find a way to create the scene itself, and experimented with 3D shapes cut out of flat sheets so they pop up, or the possibility of creating the scene.

The next stage in the development will be to create scale cut outs and take some more photographs using a professional set up to form the cover image.

Yesterday in our studio we were considering methods of raising funds for our end of year show and D&AD. Many ideas were thrown out there and the one we are focusing on at the moment is Christmas. We have thought about designing cards and selling them, there was even a mention of making paper christmas trees thrown in there for fun! Well after doing a bit of research I found these lovely handmade pieces, they are lovely examples of what we plan to do.

Yesterday at uni we had a talk from GF Smith telling us all about paper stocks, weights and print finish processes. What caught my attention was the possibility of duplexing and tripexing, this is laminating 2 or 3 sheets of the same weight paper together.

Back: Dark grey – 540gsm with gravure embossing
Duplexed with gloss black foil blocking

This is a GF Smith business card that I was handed after the talk. It has been triplexed using purple, yellow and white Colourplan sheets.

After seeing this I really want to use the process of triplexing paper on my business cards. I like the physicality of objects and engaging in them, so would combine a bright colour paper with two natural tones of a material like grey board with a possible surface embossing. I’m so full of ideas after yesterday! It was so inspirational.

I couldn’t help writing a post about these cups!!

I drink a fair bit of coffee when I’m at uni, and now that Starbucks have their Christmas coffee out I think I will be drinking a whole lot more, especially as this year there is toffee nut and gingerbread latte’s!! With the Christmas drinks being launched it sees the return of the ‘red cup’ and this year I really like them!! They are so cheerful, I actually looked at it when I was handed my coffee and smiled, it’s always nice when something has that effect on you. So thank you Starbucks for designing something so trivial as a take away coffee cup, that made me smile!!

“Business cards for handbag designer Barbara Capparelli. Letterpress printed in two colours on the front and silkscreened in one colour on the back. For the big B – derived from the combination of two styles of History typeface by Typotheque, a hint of black was used.”

“Business cards designed by Joana Casaca Lemos. Letterpress on Birkam card 380gsm and laser engraved.”

“Filthy created a bespoke logo that was then embossed across all of the stationery, creating a latex texture on uncoated paper. They used a color palette set in black & white, with a hint of turquoise to demonstrate the attention to detail they like to achieve with all of their projects.”

All of these stationery sets have elements that I want to use in my own personal branding. The first example I want to take the embossed effect, the second I would like to use a similar material for my business cards and on the final set I like the idea of a highlighting colour, possibly sandwiching it between they grey board.

“So Here’s a little glimpse of a project we did for Honda. We were briefed to come up with a new creative DM pack to display the whole Honda car range and brand. The Idea- “Inspiration is everywhere”. Inspiration for making the cars often came from looking at the world around you rather than just staring at a blank piece of paper. We commissioned Hattie Newman to come up with these gorgeous paper sets to which would home the cars. Each set would fit with the characteristics and personality of the car and each set also tells a small story about other Honda products and antics.
