These are a selection of spreads from Little White Lies magazine. They will certainly go on to influence my Final Project as I really want to incorporate single colour printing on a coloured paper stock in to the brochure designs I produce, and these are really good examples of this process.

On Thursday last week we were briefed on a project to design the end of year exhibition promotion for Colchester School or Art. As the exhibition has no title it has been difficult to come up with concepts for the material. But I have been researching in to what other college graduate show promotion is like and here are a few examples.

“Are We Endangering Animals uses graphic models to bring to light how destructive human activities have led to the current rate of species extinction. According to the World Wildlife Fund this rate is at least one hundred to one thousand times higher then the expected natural rate. Some of the major human activities that are affecting animals are deforestation, human encroachment; both of which cause habitat loss for animals, climate change due to carbon emissions, poaching and illegal fishing.

As a designer you would think that I draw loads, in reality I really don’t! But last night I re-discovered why I like drawing, it’s really theraputic and relaxing after a busy day. My other half has an interest in anime and manga drawing, he has a book called How to Draw Manga, in which I found how to draw a cat. Me being me, didn’t bother following the instructions so ended up drawing it from eye, don’t think it turned out that badly! I’m quite proud of my cat drawing, might have to take up drawing more often!

Endangered species awareness campaign to inform and recruit sponsors

Taking place during Earth Day, this campaign featured city-wide wild postings backed up by WWF appointed street teams, distributing buttons and brochures to the public. Using the hand as a device, this campaign encouraged to “reach out” and guided towards more concrete actions to protect wildlife.

What I propose to create for my final project is a bi-annual brochure for the Wildlife Trust that encompasses the information they have for you to collect from their nature reserves and visitors centres or to download and access on their website.

Currently any leaflets you pick up tend to be disregarded after it’s intended purpose, and with the type of organisation that the Wildlife Trust is, this is not a very sustainable option for them. My proposal will aim to solve the issue of sustainability as I can use renewable and more natural materials to create a container for all information, as well as making the information provided more accessible and engaging to prevent it from becoming ephemeral like the current material available.

The aim of my final major project is to re-design printed matter that doesn’t work in it’s current form, be that because it is disregarded after its intended use or because it isn’t engaging enough for the intended audience.

I want to utilise the knowledge I have gained from the research in to the hand made and material processes to create and design a physical object that combines paper stock, craft process and traditional processes with digital design and layouts.

The objectives of this project is to solve the issue of sustainability, the current material is ephemeral, I want to change this so that the viewer of the information is more inclined to keep the object and not throw it away.

I also want to create an object that challenges the way in which the material is presented, making it more engaging to the viewer, unlike in the materials current format.
