“The artwork ‘Cosmopolitan’ is a new work especially created for an exhibition. Subject of the work are buildings of New York. The work consists out of four sides: two white and two black sides. The four sides are connected to each other by means of integrated tabs and slots. When these tabs/slots are loosened the work can be folded into a two-dimensional surface.”

“We’ve created a papercraft instrument (with tunable tuning heads) surrounded by paper quilling and spiral music notes.

The stringed instrument symbolizes the symphony while the quilling represents the many sounds of a symphony, which is reinforced visually by the surrounding music notes. Motion and passion were the two biggest themes we focused on. After being photographed, the imagery was used on brochures, posters, bookmarks, and program covers. The papercraft itself has since been shadowboxed, and travels around with the symphony during the concert series.”

So I recently posted about some of my ideas for a current project. This brief was put on the back burner over the weekend due to the dissertation draft needing to be completed!! Here is some of the concept work that I was working on in the studio last week, it is basically exploring lighting set ups to create potential shadows from my cut out design. Some of the pictures are taken on a professional set up and some are taken on my BlackBerry just because the light through the window cast some interesting shadows.

After I had taken a few test photographs of the cut out shapes, I then tried to find a way to create the scene itself, and experimented with 3D shapes cut out of flat sheets so they pop up, or the possibility of creating the scene.

The next stage in the development will be to create scale cut outs and take some more photographs using a professional set up to form the cover image.

So here is some work in progress I am doing at the moment. The pictures above are examples of some of the cut outs I have been doing relating to fairy tales. The first is a castle and the second is part of a woodland scene. The proposed idea from the cutouts is to create a spooky feel to the piece and to show the darkness of the stories I need to portray. This is obviously the first concept, the next stage is to enlarge the cutouts and then photograph them to create shadows on the wall.

Another current avenue of exploration is creating a background colour and style that also reflects the nature of the stories, to do this I am either considering water colour on paper or when I do the photography to use blue coloured lighting to light the background where the shadows will be cast. These are just basic ideas and I have no idea where the development could lead me, might even be back to square one and the cut outs!!
